Srinagar, Oct 29: The National Service Scheme (NSS) Unit of the Faculty of Horticulture SKUAST-K, in collaboration with Sakshi Foundation, conducted a one-day awareness programme on the theme “Building Safe and inclusive spaces through POSH and POCSO awareness” to address and raise awareness on the crucial issue of child sexual abuse.
The event took place at the Vice Chancellor’s Secretariat, with the objective of informing students, scholars, faculty members, and social workers about the seriousness of child sexual abuse and relevant protective laws, including the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012.
The programme was attended by Prof. S.A. Wani, Dean Faculty of Horticulture, Prof. Neelofar Dean Students Welfare and NSS Programme Coordinator, Prof. Shaheen Gul, Chairperson Women in work place Committee, faculty member and more than 200 students.
Prof. Neelofar, NSS Programme Coordinator and Dean of Students Welfare, emphasized the vital role of awareness and education in protecting children. Prof S.A. Wani, Dean of the Faculty of Horticulture, spoke on various initiatives addressing sensitive social issues that foster a protective and aware society.
The awareness programme featured Hanna John, Project Manager and Trainer at The Rakshin Project, as the keynote speaker.
A Political Science graduate from the University of Delhi, Ms. John is a dedicated social worker who has trained over 5,000 college students to become advocates against child sexual abuse. Her extensive experience and dedication brought valuable insights to the event.
Lecture of Hanna John was followed by a Question -Answer Session in which students posed many relevant question along with some remarkable suggestions.
Organized under the guidance of Dr. Seemi Lohani, Students Welfare Officer/ NSS Prog. officer and Ms. Nargis, Law graduate from Kashmir University and child rights enthusiast the event saw enthusiastic participation from various sectors of the academic and social community.
The programme was moderated by Sakina Samoon and Mariya Nazir, post graduate students of the faculty of Horticulture.
