Jammu, Nov 28: “Deployment of elite National Security Guard (NSG) commandos in Jammu region by the Union Home Ministry will strengthen the government’s anti-terror operations and help wipe out terrorism from the Union Territory (UT) completely,” Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) executive member Raman Suri said on Thursday.
This is the Union government’s steadfast resolve to restore peace and security here and the deployment follows a series of terror incidents in Jammu necessitating rapid and specialised responses to emerging threats, Suri said in a statement issued here.
He said the establishment of a permanent NSG hub in Jammu city will enable swift deployment of commandos in emergency situations. Earlier, NSG units had to be airlifted from Delhi or other hubs, causing delays. “The Jammu hub ensures that commandos can now respond within critical timeframes, significantly enhancing operational efficiency. The strength of NSG personnel stationed in Jammu is sufficient to tackle potential emergencies effectively and will help government and security agencies deal with the situation immediately,” he said.
The BJP leader said the NSG has already demonstrated its capabilities in Jammu, having participated in last month’s anti-terror operation in Akhnoor. This marked the first instance of the NSG’s involvement in a counter-terror operation in the Jammu region. “Their role in such operations underscores the government’s determination to leverage specialised forces to bolster the region’s security apparatus and wipe out terrorism from here completely so that people could breathe in a conducive atmosphere and lead normal lives without fear,” he said.
Over recent years, districts such as Kathua, Doda, Kishtwar, Rajouri and Poonch have witnessed a surge in terror attacks and by deploying the NSG in Jammu and Kashmir, the government aims to address these challenges comprehensively which deserves applause, Suri said. “The force’s proficiency in urban combat, hostage rescue, and long-range sniper operations make it a vital asset in combating modern-day terrorism. The induction of NSG units is also expected to provide them with critical combat experience.”
The BJP leader said that NSG personnel were first deployed in Jammu and Kashmir in 1989 when Rubaiya Sayeed was kidnapped. However, their presence was phased out in the 1990s. Their re-induction signals a shift in strategy, allowing the commandos to adapt to dynamic security challenges while addressing skill atrophy concerns within the force, he said.
“The government under Prime Minister Narendra Modi has left no stone unturned in building a safer Jammu and Kashmir,” Raman Suri said.
