Srinagar, May 22: India’s G20 Sherpa Amitabh Kant said that there is no better backdrop for films than the picturesque landscapes of Kashmir, adding that “Kashmir is not just a tourist destination; it is a distinctive place that entices filmmakers across the country.
Speaking during the inaugural day of the 3rd G20 tourism meeting held at SKICC. Kant emphasized that Kashmir’s unique natural beauty is attracting filmmakers from across the country, making it an unparalleled choice for film production.
Addressing the delegates from G20 countries at the event ‘Film Tourism for Economic and Cultural Preservation,’ Kant expressed his belief in peace, prosperity, and the transformative power of tourism, as advocated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He underscored the fact that Kashmir is not only a tourist hotspot but also an exceptional location that captivates filmmakers.
Highlighting the cultural and economic benefits of promoting film tourism, Kant continued, “We aim to support and facilitate the infusion of romance and glamour into your films. Prime Minister Narendra Modi recognises the multiplier effect of tourism and its potential to generate employment.”
Kant further reminisced about renowned Bollywood films that were shot in Kashmir, becoming an integral part of India’s film legacy. The timeless classics such as “Bobby,” starring Rishi Kapoor and Dimple Kapadia, which showcased the enchanting beauty of Gulmarg, and “Kashmir Ki Kali” and “Jab Jab Phool Khilay,” all filmed in the region, continue to resonate with audiences.
“The appeal of Kashmir as a film location is obvious, with 370 films seeking permission to shoot in the valley.” While filmmakers had previously turned to international destinations such as Switzerland, Kant underlined the reciprocal nature of the film business, with many international films also picking India as their favourite shooting location.
“This exchange has been a two-way process. For instance, ‘Natu Natu,’ the Oscar-winning song from the movie ‘RRR,’ was filmed in the presidential palace of Ukraine. It exemplifies the mutual collaboration between countries,” Kant elucidated.
The third Tourism Working Group Meeting of the G20 countries, focusing on film tourism, witnessed the participation of approximately 60 foreign delegates. This gathering further strengthens the position of Kashmir as a hub for film production while also fostering cultural exchange and economic growth.
The burgeoning interest of filmmakers in Kashmir reflects the region’s intrinsic charm and allure, promising a bright future for film tourism and the people of Kashmir, who stand to benefit from the resultant economic opportunities and cultural preservation.
