Srinagar, May 31: In a development that has set political circles abuzz across J&K, Chief Minister and National Conference vice president Omar Abdullah has convened a crucial meeting of all National Conference legislators on June 3, a move being widely viewed as significant amid the evolving political landscape in the Union Territory.
The high-level meeting is scheduled to be held at 10 am on Wednesday at the Chief Minister’s official residence on Gupkar Road in Srinagar. Formal invitations have been extended to all National Conference Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs), signalling the importance the party leadership attaches to the gathering.
According to party leaders, the meeting will deliberate on matters of collective importance and issues directly linked to public welfare. While the official communication has remained measured in its wording, the timing of the meeting has fuelled speculation about possible political announcements, policy initiatives, or a broader strategy concerning J&K’s future political course, especially regarding restoration of Statehood.
The development assumes added significance in light of remarks made by Omar Abdullah last month. Addressing a public gathering in Tangmarg on May 6, the Chief Minister had hinted that he had much to say on certain critical issues but was deliberately exercising restraint.
“I want to burst like a cloudburst,” Omar had remarked at the time, while indicating that he would reserve his detailed views for a public address after Eid. The statement immediately attracted attention and generated widespread curiosity regarding the issues he intended to raise.
Trying to add clarity to the purpose of the meeting, Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary said the June 3 gathering is primarily aimed at reviewing the functioning of the government and assessing progress on commitments made to the people.
Talking to reporters, Choudhary said the Chief Minister will seek detailed feedback from legislators regarding the implementation of promises outlined in the National Conference manifesto. He said discussions would also focus on governance, public service delivery, and measures required to further strengthen the party’s organizational structure across J&K.
Political significance has also been attached to the list of invitees. While Congress legislators, despite being alliance partners in the government, have not been invited to the meeting, independent legislators supporting the Omar Abdullah-led government have been asked to attend, a move that has drawn considerable attention in political circles. With Eid now over and the June 3 meeting approaching, observers believe the National Conference leadership may use the occasion to assess the government’s performance, gauge public sentiment and formulate its strategy on a range of pressing issues, including development priorities, governance challenges and Centre-UT relations.
The meeting also comes at a time when the Omar-led government is navigating growing public expectations on governance and service delivery while simultaneously pursuing the political aspirations articulated by the party during the Assembly elections. The National Conference, which secured a significant mandate in the polls, has repeatedly emphasized safeguarding the interests of the people.
Political analysts say the gathering could serve multiple purposes — reviewing departmental performance, obtaining constituency-level feedback from legislators, coordinating legislative priorities and preparing the party’s roadmap for the months ahead.
Although no formal agenda beyond public welfare, governance review and organizational matters has been made public, the unusual attention surrounding the meeting reflects the anticipation generated by Omar Abdullah’s earlier remarks. Many within political and public circles are keenly watching whether the Chief Minister uses the occasion to signal a new political initiative or elaborate on issues that have remained at the center of political discourse in J&K.
