Udhampur, May 31: MLA Udhampur East, Ranbir Singh Pathania, on Sunday inaugurated a new drinking water supply scheme at Shri Kali Mata Gaushala in Thill Roun, Udhampur, and called for stronger measures to curb bovine smuggling and illegal cow slaughter across Jammu and Kashmir.
The water supply project was completed through a joint effort involving local donors, the Gaushala Management Committee and the MLA’s Constituency Development Fund (CDF), ensuring a reliable source of potable water for the cattle housed at the facility.
During his visit, Pathania reviewed the infrastructure and facilities available at the gaushala, including cattle sheds, fodder arrangements, sanitation and drinking water provisions.
He interacted with the management committee and volunteers and appreciated their efforts in caring for abandoned and destitute cattle.
Addressing a gathering, the MLA stressed the need for a comprehensive strategy to prevent bovine smuggling and illegal slaughter.
He advocated the installation of CCTV cameras along national highways and key link roads, saying such surveillance would help curb illegal transportation of bovines as well as other criminal activities.
Pathania also highlighted the importance of integrating animal welfare with rural development.
He said strengthening dairy infrastructure, improving indigenous cattle breeds, ensuring quality veterinary care and promoting scientific livestock management could significantly enhance rural livelihoods and farmers’ incomes.
“Animal welfare and rural development must go hand in hand. Institutions like gaushalas not only provide shelter to destitute cattle but also serve as centres of social service and community participation,” he said.
The MLA also inspected the road leading to the gaushala and expressed concern over its condition. He directed the concerned authorities to rectify defects in recently executed repair works within the prescribed liability period. Reaffirming his support for the institution, Pathania assured the management of all possible assistance for improving infrastructure and basic amenities. He also appealed to citizens, social organisations and philanthropists to contribute towards cattle welfare and the strengthening of gaushalas in the region.
