Ganderbal, July 19: The much-awaited water filtration plant in the Rayil area of Gund in Central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district is expected to become operational soon. Once functional, the facility will supply 45,000 gallons of clean drinking water daily to the residents of Rayil and New Colony Gund, significantly improving the region’s access to safe potable water.Constructed at a cost of ₹3.4 crore under the NABARD scheme, the project aims to address the long-pending demand of locals who have for years struggled with inadequate and unsafe water supply. Officials from the Jal Shakti Department said the advanced technology installed at the plant will ensure uninterrupted operation, prevent waste buildup, and maintain a consistent supply of clean water. To guarantee smooth functioning, the Power Development Department (PDD) is in the process of installing a dedicated transformer to meet the electricity requirements of the plant.Meanwhile, residents of Cherwan area in Kangan have raised concerns about the poor quality of drinking water, especially during rainfall when the supply turns muddy and unfit for consumption. Locals have urged authorities to establish a separate filtration plant in their area to address the recurring issue.“This is not the first time rain has turned our water supply completely dirty. We have been facing this issue for years,” said a resident of Cherwan. The villagers have appealed to Mian Mehar Ali, the MLA of Kangan, to intervene and take up the matter with the concerned departments.“Clean water is a basic necessity, and we request the MLA to address this long-pending demand so that future generations do not have to suffer the same problems,” the residents said.
