Srinagar, Jan 21: The meteorological department on Sunday predicted light snow at isolated higher reaches of Kashmir from January 25 and may continue for subsequent two days.
Director Meteorological Department, Dr. Mukhtar Ahmad told Rising Kashmir that dry weather is expected to persist until Wednesday. However, there is a forecast of generally cloudy weather with light snow at isolated higher regions on January 24 and 25.
“Subsequently, from January 27-28, the prediction is for generally cloudy weather with light rain/snow occurring at scattered places. There is a possibility of light to moderate rain/snow at many places very likely (details awaited) from January 29-31,” he said.
Dr Mukhtar further said that moderate to dense fog and fall in day temperature over plains of Jammu division was likely expected during the next two days.
Independent Weather Forecaster Aabid Maqbool said there is indication of heavy snowfall in Jammu and Kashmir in the last week of January , there are 65% chances.
“Snowfall is expected in Sonamarg, Gulmarg & Pahalgam during the last week of January,” Maqbool said.
Meanwhile, Srinagar recorded a low of minus 4.8°C last night. Qazigund noted a minimum of minus 5.0°C. Pahalgam resort in south Kashmir reported a low of minus 6.5°C compared to minus 5.5°C on the previous night, with the temperature being 1.0°C above normal. Kokernag, also in south Kashmir, recorded a minimum of minus 2.3°C .
In north Kashmir, Kupwara town recorded a low of minus 5.7°C while Gulmarg, the renowned skiing resort in north Kashmir, reported a low of minus 5.0°C against minus 4.6°C on the previous night, registering a temperature 3.2°C above normal.
Jammu recorded a minimum of 5.6°C while Banihal recorded a low of minus 1.2°C, Batote 1.7°C, and Bhaderwah minus 0.4°C.
A traffic police official said that based on fair weather and favorable road conditions, both Light Motor Vehicles (LMVs) and Heavy Motor Vehicles (HMVs) would be permitted from both sides on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway (NH-44). Commuters were urged to adhere to lane discipline.
