Srinagar, Mar 13: Higher reaches of Kashmir valley received fresh snowfall while rains lashed plains on Wednesday. The officials at the meteorological department said that prevailing weather conditions will improve today.
As per MeT data, fresh snowfall of 2-4 inches was reported in Doodhpathri, 5-7 inches in Gulmarg, 2-3 inches in Sonamarg, 2 inches at Peer Ki Gali along Mughal Road, 2-3 inches in Sadna Top, 2-5 inches in Machil Sector, 2 inches in Lolab. 5 inches at AchooraGurez, 2-3 inches in Tangmarg. Higher reaches in Bandipora and Kupwara recorded light snowfall till late evening. Karnah and Machil sectors also received light snowfall.
Meanwhile, intermittent rains were recorded in plains. Srinagar received 1.4 millimetres of rainfall between 8:30 am to 5:30 pm on Sunday. Qazigund 0.6 mm, Pahalgam 3.3 mm, and Kupwara recorded 4.4 mm of rainfall.
Director MeT Srinagar, Dr Mukhtar Ahmad said that plains in Kashmir witnessed light to moderate rains while upper reaches received snowfall till Wednesday late night. Some places witnessed thunder/Lightning accompanied by gusty winds over plains of Kashmir and Jammu Division. (Wind speed 30-40 KMPH).
“From 14th to 18th January, the weather will remain mostly dry and clear. There is no forecast of any major spell during the period. There will be a rise in minimum temperature and increase in day temperature during the period.
The traffic police spokesman said that there was huge congestion between Chenani and Ramban because of acute slow movement at Dalwas due to single lane and poor surface condition of road on Jammu-Srinagar NHW on Wednesday, Commuters are advised to follow lane discipline, overtaking will lead heavy fine, avoid travel if not necessary, he said.
Moreover, people are advised/requested not ply against advisory/traffic plan in view of possible traffic congestion because of narrow carriageway between Nashree and Banihal on Jammu-Srinagar NHW, the spokesman said.
He said on Thursday, subject to fair weather and good road conditions, only one way traffic shall be allowed from Srinagar towards Jammu, these vehicles shall be allowed from Qazigund from 0600 hrs to 1100 hrs. However, HMVs shall be managed in a regulated manner. People are requested to be alert while traveling and be cautious of shooting stones and landslides and avoid travel if not necessary. No Vehicle shall be allowed after cut off timing, the spokesman said.
Meanwhile Sonamarg-Leh highway and Mughal road remained closed for 17th Day due to snowfall along the highway. While snow clearance operations are underway to restore these twin roads.
