SRINAGAR, JULY 01:
In preparation for the 62-day AmarnathYatra set to commence this Sunday, the Meteorological Department has established special weather base camps at Baltal and Pahalgam. These camps aim to provide real-time and accurate weather forecasts to the pilgrims undertaking the sacred journey.
According to Sonam Lotus, the Director of the Meteorological Department in Srinagar, the weather base camps at Baltal and Pahalgam will play a crucial role in ensuring the safety and well-being of the pilgrims. Lotus stated, “The two teams will also be responsible for providing accurate weather forecast updates from the ground zero to the pilgrims who will be visiting the holy cave from across the country.”
The teams at the weather camps will diligently monitor rainfall, the progression of cloud formations, and promptly observe thunderstorms and lightning in real-time. Lotus emphasized the significance of these teams during extreme weather events such as heavy rainfall, as the data collected will aid in predicting flash floods in the local regions.
Both teams will operate round the clock, working tirelessly at both Baltal and Pahalgam, to keep the pilgrims informed and alert with weather warnings and updates. Previously, the region primarily relied on the Srinagar centre for weather information, but the establishment of these weather base camps will provide a more localized and accurate forecast for the pilgrims.
Lotus added, “Apart from these weather base camps, the Meteorological Office in Kashmir will also issue special advisories during the Yatra period.” This initiative aims to ensure the safety and convenience of the pilgrims throughout their spiritual journey.
The AmarnathYatra holds great religious significance, attracting devotees from various parts of India and other countries. With the establishment of the weather base camps and the provision of real-time accurate forecasts, the Meteorological Department aims to enhance the overall experience of the pilgrims and contribute to their safety and well-being.
