Handwara, July 07: The residents of several villages in the lower Mawer in this north Kashmir area have raised concerns over the Eeco drivers using commercial gas, saying this not only irks the commuters but also risks passenger safety. These vehicles, as per the residents, are plying on the Handwara to Hangha route.
They criticised the authorities for turning a blind eye to the use of commercial gas by these drivers. “The vehicles emitting gas make travel uncomfortable for passengers,” Bashir Ahmad, a resident of Maratgam, told Rising Kashmir. He also complained about the “unjust” fare of Rs 20 for a “mere 2.5 kilometers”.
Bashir alleged many of these drivers operate without valid licences and frequently overload their vehicles in contravention of the Motor Vehicles Act.
A college girl from Hangha while sharing her experience said traveling in these vehicles for just a few minutes becomes difficult due to the irritating gas smell. Moreover, the issue of overloading exacerbates the challenges faced by female passengers, particularly those with medical conditions, she said.
The locals have appealed to the Assistant Regional Transport Officer (ARTO) Kupwara and the Superintendent of Police (SP) Handwara to launch a drive against these drivers and ensure the safety of the people.
ARTO Kupwara told Rising Kashmir that strict action will be taken against those found violating the traffic laws.
