Srinagar, Mar 14: The Kashmir Power Distribution Corporation Limited Tuesday announced that the department is gearing up to improve the power scenario with the beginning of the holy month of Ramadan.

Speaking to reporters, the managing director of KPDCL, Mohammad Yasin Choudhary, said the department is working to provide uninterrupted power supply to consumers, adding that they are ensuring a round-the-clock electricity supply in metered areas.

He said especially during the sehri and iftar times, the people will have uninterrupted power supplies. “There will be no compromise in providing the electricity supply during these particular times.”

So far, he said the department has installed around 90,000 smart meters in Srinagar alone He went on to say that there would be no increase in tariff bills after the installation of smart meters.

Choudhary said that as far as Downtown Srinagar is concerned, they have roughly completed a small target of 1,000 consumers, which includes the areas of Hawal, KK Mohalla, Rainawari, and Khanyar.

During the installation of smart meters, Choudhary said the department faced huge opposition, but we want to let people know that these meters have the best advantages. These meters will be generating tariff bills directly; there will be no human intervention. This also provides a good voltage to consumers.

Speaking of the unmetered areas, he stated that before smart meters people used to worry that installing them would result in a high electricity bill. ” We’ve also noted that there haven’t been any significant changes in bill cycling, and everyone can now view all of the readings on their phone.”

People are using and monitoring their power consumption accordingly, which is giving them insight on how to save electricity and manage their bills well.

“Our peak-load demand during the busiest winters was over 2900 megawatts, but it is currently only around 2000 megawatts. As far as availability is concerned, we have kept 1700 megawatts because the weather is also good.”
