Pulwama, Mar 10: In a remarkable display of skill and determination, Kashmir’s own Owais Yaqoob has etched his name in the annals of Indian sports history, clinching a momentous victory for India against Afghanistan in MFN 14, the pinnacle of professional Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) bouts.
Hailing from Murran village of Pulwama, Owais Yaqoob showcased exceptional prowess in the ring, exhibiting strategic brilliance and relentless perseverance against his opponent Mohammad Azam Mokhlis.
In a gruelling 15-minute bout, divided into three rounds of five minutes each, Owais’s relentless pressure and calculated strikes ultimately led to a unanimous decision in his favour.
“This is the biggest win of my career,” expressed Owais, his jubilation echoing through the arena.
This triumph, Owais believes, will elevate that his rank among  active Asian pro lightweight fighters.
The overwhelming support from fans, including 20-30 fervent Kashmiri supporters and numerous enthusiasts from various Indian states, fueled Owais’s determination throughout the bout.
Expressing his gratitude, Owais emphasised the significance of this victory for the future of MMA in Kashmir, as he now sets his sights on next big bout to which he has already qualified with this  spectacular win.
Owais Yaqoob’s journey to the international MMA arena has been nothing short of inspirational.
Making his professional debut at MFN in March 2023, Owais’s stellar performance earned him recognition, leading to his selection for international bouts after an impressive display in the road to MFN contender series in 2022.
Prior to his MFN triumph, Owais showcased his martial arts prowess on the global stage by winning a bronze medal in the World Eskrima Kali Arnis Federation championship in the Philippines in July 2022.
Domestically, Owais has amassed an impressive collection of 11 gold medals and 7 silvers at national level events, along with 17 gold medals in UT level competitions.
Beyond his personal achievements, Owais remains committed to nurturing the next generation of MMA talents through his academy, Lion’s Den, where he imparts his expertise to aspiring youngsters.
Looking ahead, Owais Yaqoob harbours ambitious dreams of representing his country at the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), the pinnacle of MMA competition.
His remarkable journey serves as an inspiration not only for Kashmiri athletes but for aspiring fighters across the nation.
MFN, India’s premier mixed martial arts platform, founded by Bollywood icon Tiger Shroff, alongside his mother Ayesha Shroff and sister Krishna Shroff in 2019, continues to provide a stage for athletes like Owais to shine.
MFN hosted 14 events till date.
