Srinagar, June 21: As day temperatures in Kashmir have risen for the past four days, Srinagar recorded the season’s hottest day so far on Wednesday, with the mercury reaching 34°C. While officials predict that the region’s dry and hot weather will continue for the next 48 hours.
Sonam Lotus, Director Meteorological Department Centre Kashmir, told Rising Kashmir that Srinagar recorded the hottest day of the season at 34 degrees Celsius, and that the same weather conditions would prevail in Kashmir for the next three days.
“The maximum temperatures in Jammu are expected to range between 38 and 40 degrees Celsius.” The maximum temperature in Kashmir division will be around 32-34 degrees Celsius. “There will be a heat wave in the plains of central and southern Kashmir for the next three days,” he predicted.
Regarding the temperature rise, Lotus stated that the previous maximum temperature in June for Srinagar was 35° C on June 3, 2018.
“On June 29, 1978, the highest maximum temperature ever recorded was 37.8°C.” “The current hot and dry conditions are expected to last until June 23rd,” he added.
Lotus said from June 24-28, weather will remain generally cloudy with intermittent light to moderate thunderstorms at fairly widespread places.
“Few places over Jammu division may receive intense showers for a short period,” he said.
As per MeT data, Gulmarg in north Kashmir was the coldest with a high of 24.6 degrees Celsius and 13.6 as minimum temperatures.
Health resort Pahalgam in south Kashmir recorded 28.4°C as maximum temperature and 10.6°C as minimum temperature respectively. Winter capital Jammu recorded at 38.6°C as maximum temperature and 30.5 as minimum temperatures
Kupwara in north Kashmir recorded maximum temperatures of 33.1°C. Banihal recorded at 30.9°C as maximum temperature and 21.2 as minimum temperatures
As per traffic spokesman, Jammu Srinagar NHW remained blocked for several hours due to NAVYUG Tunnel closed by tunnel authority.
On Thursday, subject to fair weather and road clearance, LMVs Passenger/Private Cars shall be allowed from both sides on Jammu-Srinagar NHW viz Jammu towards Srinagar and vice-versa. TCU Jammu/Srinagar shall liaise with TCU Ramban before releasing the traffic.
Similarly on Srinagar-Leh Road, vehicular movement shall be allowed from both sides viz Srinagar towards Kargil and vice-versa. LMVs followed by HMVs shall be allowed from Minamarg towards Srinagar at 0600 hrs. to 1030 hrs.
“Similarly, LMVs followed by HMVs shall be allowed from Sonamarg towards Kargil at 1300 hrs to 1700 hrs. No vehicle shall be allowed after cut off timings,” the spokesman said.
On Mughal Road, LMVs shall be allowed from both sides viz. Poonch towards Shopian and vice versa. However, HMVs shall be allowed from Shopian towards Poonch. These vehicles shall be allowed from Behramgalla (Buffliaz) and Herpora (Shopian) at 0800 hrs. upto 1600 hrs. No vehicle shall be allowed after cut off timings, the spokesman said.
In an advisory, Deputy Commissioner Ramban said that no overloaded or misfit HMV shall be allowed to ply over main NH-44. Breakdown of such vehicles causes traffic jams, bringing inconvenience to others.
“On June 23 is a ‘No Traffic Day’ on National Highway-44. No traffic will be allowed between Nashriand Banihal to ensure urgent repair and maintenance works by National Highway Authority of Highway,” he said.
