Srinagar, July 19:In a significant respite from the scorching heat wave, a heavy spell of rainfall on Wednesday led to a considerable drop in temperatures, bringing relief from the hot and humid weather conditions in Kashmir. The Meteorological Department (MeT) has forecasted a two-day wet spell from July 20 to 22 in the region, according to officials.
Director of the Meteorological Department Centre Kashmir, Sonam Lotus, stated that light rain has already provided relief to parts of the Valley, with heavy water logging witnessed in low lying areas of Srinagar city.
“We are expecting light to moderate rain with thunder and lightning at many places, with intense showers for short periods at few places during the next 4-6 hours. The intensity will decrease later,” Lotus informed.
Starting from July 20, intermittent light to moderate rain, along with thundershowers, is anticipated in Jammu and Kashmir, with a possibility of heavy rains in the Jammu region throughout the week.
However, the heavy downpour also poses several risks, including flash floods, mudslides, and landslides. In light of this, authorities have issued a warning, advising people to remain cautious and stay away from streams, rivers, and other vulnerable spots.
Transportation in the region has been significantly affected due to landslides and mud slush. The 270-kilometer-long Srinagar-Jammu highway was closed after fresh landslides blocked the road at Mehar Cafeteria Morth. The Mughal road, connecting Shopian district with Rajouri and Poonch, also faced closure due to a landslide.
Partial restoration of traffic on the Jammu-Srinagar national highway took place on Wednesday evening after being temporarily closed due to mudslides. However, authorities advised travellers to confirm with Traffic Control Units before venturing on NH-44.
Vehicular movement on the Srinagar-Sonamarg-Gumri road and Mughal road will be allowed subject to fair weather and good road conditions. Specific timings for vehicular movement have been designated to manage traffic flow effectively.
Authorities continue to monitor the weather situation closely and urge residents to stay vigilant and take necessary precautions during this period of heavy rainfall.
