Jammu, Oct 26: The J&K National Panthers Party Bhim commemorated Accession Day by paying tributes to Maharaja Hari Singh, saying the late ruler’s decision to accede Jammu and Kashmir to the Union of India is pivotal in the region’s history.
Vilakshan Singh, president of the J&K National Panthers Party Bhim, highlighted the significance of October 26, 1947, when Maharaja Hari Singh signed the Instrument of Accession. The accession was formally accepted by Lord Mountbatten, the then Governor-General of India, on October 27, 1947.
“The historic landing of the first battalion of the Indian Army at Srinagar Airport around 8:30 am that day marked a crucial moment when the Sikh Battalion engaged the Pakistani forces after the Dogra Army, under Brigadier Rajinder Singh, had valiantly resisted for three days,” he said
During the observance of the 78th Accession Day in Jammu, Singh expressed deep gratitude to the Indian Army for their bravery and sacrifice. He recalled how Maharaja Hari Singh appointed Brigadier Rajinder Singh to lead the defence against the Pakistani raiders, with many J&K Army soldiers sacrificing their lives to delay the invasion.
Singh also said that a large portion of the former state of Jammu and Kashmir remains under illegal foreign occupation. “The central government must take decisive steps toward the liberation of Pakistan-occupied and China-occupied regions of J&K,” the JKNPP leader said, adding that such actions would serve as a fitting tribute to Maharaja Hari Singh.
