Srinagar, June 09: Jammu and Kashmir witnessed an extraordinary surge in international tourism last year, with foreign tourist arrivals increasing by nearly 300 percent. A total of 55,000 tourists from outside India visited the region, marking a significant milestone for the tourism sector, according to the Secretary of Tourism.
“Tourism in Jammu and Kashmir is reaching new heights with a steady rise in both domestic and international tourists,” stated Mudgal at a music concert co-hosted by Jammu and Kashmir Tourism and Big FM at Zabarwan Park on June 8. The event featured Qazi Touqeer, a Fame Gurukul alum and local celebrity from Khanyar. “Through entertainment, we aim to offer a diverse experience to tourists from around the world,” she added.
The government is leveraging the entertainment industry to promote Jammu and Kashmir globally. Initiatives include organizing music concerts and other entertainment events to attract more visitors, Mudgal said.
Mudgal highlighted the department’s strategy to host more concerts featuring local artists and celebrities, enhancing the cultural appeal of the region. She cited the success of the Sunburn music festival in Jammu, which attracted attendees from across India, including Chennai.
“Such collaborations are vital for boosting tourism, which alongside agriculture, plays an important role in Jammu and Kashmir’s economy. We are committed to increasing tourist inflow through similar initiatives,” she noted.
To support this growth, the tourism department is focusing on developing world-class infrastructure. Gulmarg is being transformed into a premier skiing destination, while Pahalgam and Patnitop are also receiving significant attention. The government is equally investing in promoting alpine lakes and other lesser-known areas.
Mudgal emphasized that Kashmir is on track to set new records in tourism this year, with half a million visitors arriving by mid-May. These efforts underscore Jammu and Kashmir’s potential as a top global tourist destination.
The government’s multifaceted approach aims to sustain and further enhance the region’s tourism appeal, ensuring a robust contribution to the local economy and providing visitors with memorable experiences, she added.
