Srinagar, May 21: The Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) commemorated Balidan Divas on Wednesday to observe the 34th martyrdom anniversary of Bharat Ratna, former Prime Minister, Late Rajiv Gandhi, at the Srinagar Congress Party headquarters.
The event was presided over by MLA Bandipora Nizam Din Bhat. Congress leaders and workers paid tributes to Rajiv Gandhi and observed a two-minute silence in his honour, remembering his sacrifices for the nation.
During the ceremony, leaders highlighted Rajiv Gandhi’s “selfless service” and “remarkable achievements”, describing them as milestones in India’s inclusive development. They highlighted his key contributions to the implementation of the Panchayat Raj system, lowering the voting age to 18, spearheading the IT revolution, strengthening India’s defence system, reforming education policies, and introducing various measures to position India among the world’s most powerful nations.
Leaders described Rajiv Gandhi as the architect of modern India—a towering statesman and visionary leader credited with igniting India’s march towards modernisation, technological advancement, and people’s empowerment. “Rajiv Gandhi’s martyrdom serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices leadership demands and his unwavering commitment to a united, prosperous, and progressive India. His dreams of a developed and harmonious nation continue to inspire generations,” they said.
Rajiv Gandhi, they said, was a son of the soil who infused hope among millions. His visionary and courageous leadership was instrumental in preparing India to face future challenges through initiatives like the telecom and IT revolution, computerisation programs, peace accords, universal immunisation, and educational reforms.
The speakers paid tribute to Rajiv Gandhi’s significant contributions to nation-building, emphasising his unwavering dedication to safeguarding national interests, promoting equitable development, and ensuring peace and stability. His leadership, they added, was characterised by resilience and foresight in tackling every challenge.
Among those who paid floral tributes were former legislator Bashir Ahmad Magrey, Abdul Gani Khan, Nissar Ahmad Mundoo, Mahila President Shameema Raina, GSO Abid Imtiyaz Bhat, Fayaz Ahmad Mir, Mir Ruvais, Media Coordinator Dr. Audil Farooq Mir Lasjan, DCC Presidents Irfan Naqib, Umer Jaan, Er Muzaffar Dar, Mir Mustafak Gami, Dr. Waleed Karra, G.A. Reshi, Shameema Sopori, Shameema Mir, Er. Danish Reshi, Seerat Bashir, Saira, Rahila, and others.
