Budgam, May 05: In a prompt and proactive response to the recent hailstorm that adversely impacted orchards across Budgam district of Central Kashmir, the Joint Director Horticulture Kashmir, A. H. Bhat, Monday undertook an extensive field visit to assess the extent of crop damage.
Accompanied by a team of horticulture officers and local officials, Bhat visited several affected areas, where he interacted with distressed farmers, examined damaged orchards, and assured immediate technical support and advisory services. “Our priority is to provide timely assistance and guide affected farmers on post-hailstorm management practices to minimise long-term losses,” he stated, reaffirming the department’s commitment to orchardists during this critical period.
Farmers were advised to spray SKUAST-recommended fungicides and adhere to proper orchard sanitation practices. To further support recovery efforts, the department has planned awareness camps and on-field demonstrations in the coming days. Following the field assessment, the Joint Director also visited the Fruit Plant Nursery at Gopalpora, where he reviewed current operations and infrastructure. On-site, he directed the concerned officer to prepare a Detailed Project Report (DPR) under a special scheme aimed at upgrading and expanding the nursery.
This initiative seeks to enhance the availability of high-quality high-density planting material for farmers across the region. The department plans to strengthen nursery capacity through targeted investment, infrastructure development, and the introduction of improved fruit varieties suited to the local agro-climatic conditions. Farmers are encouraged to stay in regular contact with their local horticulture offices for continued guidance and to participate in the upcoming awareness sessions on orchard and disease management.
