Srinagar, Oct 31: The higher reaches of Kashmir including Gulmarg, Sonamarg and other reaches experienced light to moderate snowfall on Monday evening, while rain lashed plains in some parts of valley.
Upper reaches of Gulmarg in north Kashmir recorded 2 inches of fresh snowfall, Sonamarg 3 inches, Gurez 1-2 inches, Tulail 2 inches and Machil 4 inches, and 5 inches at few spots along the Zojila-Drass highway.
Director Indian Meteorological Centre Kashmir, Sonam Lotus told Rising Kashmir that higher reaches experienced light snowfall on Monday and it will continue on Tuesday.
Lotus said light rain or snow may continue till Tuesday morning at some places, especially over higher reaches, with decreased intensity. “There has been a significant drop in day temperatures due to inclement weather in the region,” he said.
Lotus said from 2nd to 4th November, the weather will remain partly to generally cloudy with possibility of light rain, and snowfall at isolated places.
“Similarly from 5-8th November they have predicted widespread light to moderate Rain, Snowfall on middle and higher reaches in Kashmir,” he said.
Lotus said the snowfall and low temperature may lead to temporary disruption of surface transportation, mainly over Zojila, Mughal Road, Sadnatop, etc.
“As per present conditions, there is 70 percent chance of snowfall in higher reaches and rain in plains,” he said.
The minimum temperatures have dropped further due to the cold wind lashing into the plains from snow-clad mountains.
On Monday, Srinagar recorded 15.8 °C as the maximum and 3.9°C as minimum temperature. Ski-resort Gulmarg recorded 11.5°C as maximum temperature and 2.5°C as the minimum temperature.
Health resort Pahalgam recorded a maximum of 18.8 °C and a minimum of 1.1 °C degrees and was the coldest place in Kashmir.
Qazigund recorded 20.6°C and 2.2° C as maximum and minimum temperatures respectively.
Kupwara in north Kashmir recorded maximum temperatures of 20.9 °C, while minimum temperatures settled at 3.8 °C.
