Baramulla March 08: International Women’s Day was celebrated at Government Degree College Baramulla on Wednesday, which was attended by the students of various departments and staff members. The program was jointly organized by the Women Development Cell and the Physical education department of GDC Baramulla.
The inaugural session was initiated by the introductory remarks by Prof. Tanveer Ahmad (HOD), Physical Education Department.
Vice Principal Prof. (Dr.) Tariq Chalkoo in his presidential address formally welcomed all the participants and acknowledged that besides the colossal developments in science and technology, women are coming to the forefront in sports as well as academics.
The first session commenced with a self-defense program that aims to teach different techniques for girls which they can use to protect themselves.
“Recently a Kashmiri girl student was attacked by an auto-rickshaw driver in Delhi by knife. Girls need to learn these techniques for their self-defense as women are now shining in every field. They are not restricted to housewives only,” Dr. Tariq said.
Asma Nazir Psychiatrist at Govt Medical College Baramulla was the chief guest. Besides Vice Principal, Dr. Tanveer (HOD) Physical Education, Dr Naushaad (HOD) Psychology and other faculty members were also present.
Appreciating the efforts for organizing such workshops, especially for women, Asma Nazir in her address said that the incidents of assaults on women are on the rise in Kashmir and women need to come to the front if such things happened to them.
“It is hard to imagine that such incidents are also on the rise in Kashmir. Due to a conservative mindset, we hesitate and don’t report to the concerned authorities. There is a possibility of such incidents in the future also,” she said, adding that it is the call of the day to inform and educate women about sexual abuse.
The program was also attended by Musharaf Quyoom, who is working as an instructor at Kashmir Combatives. He has won several medals at the national and international levels and is a black belt player. He gave an insight into the basics of Martial arts and demonstrated six basic principles of self-defense. “Age and height don’t matter in combat, what matters is skills and techniques,” he said.
Meanwhile, HOD Physical Education Department said the physical education department is ready to provide opportunities for women in all aspects mostly in the field of sports on the college campus.
At the end of the session, the memento had been presented by Dr. Tariq Chalkoo to Asma Nazir as the guest of honor of the event.
