Ganderbal, May 14: The Tehsil Gund in central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district is without a community library for hundreds of students studying in various government as well as private institutions.
Various students told Rising Kashmir that it has been nearly a decade since Gund was given tehsil status by the government but a not single community library was established here.
“We are unable to get better opportunities to prepare for civil service, NEET, JEE and other examinations. The government should provide us with a good library with the best infrastructure,” said Aqib Ahmad, a 12th Class student.
“Even if students use social media, the comfort of reading books in the library does not come with the phone,” he said.
Aqib said there is a library in Ganderbal and Kangan, but they are far away from Gund. “We need a separate library in our area which has all the books to read,” he said.
Another postgraduate student, Imtiyaz Ahmad, said, “There is a dire need for a community library in Gund as it is one of the rural areas where children still have to go to Ganderbal or Srinagar to buy expensive books because they do not get the facility here that is available elsewhere. Setting up a library in the area will help boost the literacy rate here.”
