Kulgam, Jan 01: The Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) in Kulgam has taken a significant step towards empowering farmers and orchardists by installing an Automatic Weather Station (AWS) at its Pombay campus. This cutting-edge technology promises to revolutionise agricultural practices in the region by providing real-time weather and soil moisture updates, allowing farmers to make informed decisions and optimize their yields.
Manzoor Ahmad, Head KVK, said the AWS is a major upgrade from traditional weather stations. Unlike manual methods, the AWS automates data collection, ensuring accuracy and reducing human effort, especially in remote areas.
He said the station consists of a weather-proof enclosure housing a data logger, rechargeable battery, and meteorological sensors. Mounted on a mast, the system captures a comprehensive range of vital data, including temperature, humidity, wind speed and direction, rainfall, solar radiation, soil temperature, and moisture levels. Importantly, AWS transmits this data in real-time via multiple platforms, enabling farmers to access it remotely through the internet or even via SMS.
“The applications of the AWS are far-reaching. By monitoring key parameters like temperature, humidity, and wind, farmers can adjust their fertilising and pesticide schedules, ensuring optimal application timing and effectiveness. Real-time weather information also empowers farmers to prepare for and mitigate the impact of extreme weather events like rainstorms or strong winds,” KVK Head said.
Manzoor said the ability to measure soil moisture is another game-changer. He said precise information about soil moisture allows farmers to irrigate more efficiently, conserving water resources and preventing overwatering, which can damage crops.
“The AWS can monitor pest activity, further empowering farmers to implement targeted pest control measures and protect their crops,” he added.
