Srinagar, Aug 16: Prominent Kashmiri leader Ashok Bhan has welcomed the Election Commission of India’s (ECI) decision to hold assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir, with the voting process set to be completed by October 1, 2024.
In a statement issued here, Bhan praised the decision for two key reasons. “First, it upholds the fundamental democratic principle of replacing the Lieutenant Governor’s rule with self-rule through elected representatives. Second, it honours the majesty of the Supreme Court of India, which has been upheld by both the Union of India and the ECI,” he said.
He said the people of Jammu and Kashmir have long awaited this decision, eager to participate in the electoral process and choose their representatives for the state assembly, particularly after their enthusiastic participation in the recent parliamentary elections.
“The people’s renewed commitment to democracy represents a positive shift, countering the negative narrative of bigotry, violence, and destruction that has plagued the region. This decision will help usher in an era of peace, development, and inclusive politics, setting a new societal agenda for the future of Naya Kashmir,” Bhan added.
