Jammu, Mar 10: Dr Sushil Sharma, Head of the Department of Cardiology, held a comprehensive cardiac awareness and health check-up camp here on Sunday.
The camp held against the backdrop of rapid urbanization and the escalating prevalence of cardiac ailments in urban areas, aimed to propagate a heart-friendly lifestyle among the populace.
Engaging with the attendees, Dr Sushil shed light on the concerning surge in heart diseases, particularly in urban settings. He underscored projections indicating that by 2050, nearly 70% of the global population would reside in cities, catalyzing a concurrent rise in non-communicable diseases like cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). Currently, CVDs account for a staggering 44% of all deaths worldwide.
The cardiologist elaborated on the multifaceted factors contributing to the burgeoning incidence of CVDs in urban and peri-urban environments. “Sedentary lifestyles, unhealthy dietary habits, pervasive stress, and environmental pollution are pivotal determinants of this health crisis. To mitigate these risks, it is imperative to chart out urban planning strategies that prioritize physical activity, mitigate pollution, and foster the proliferation of green spaces,” he said.
