Shopian, Nov 05: District Magistrate and Administrator of the Municipal Council Shopian, Mohammad Shahid Saleem,has imposed a strict and immediate ban on littering and open dumping of garbage within the limits of the southern district.
This order, issued under No. BES//2024/880, takes immediate effect, aiming to address the indiscriminate waste disposal practices affecting Shopian’s public spaces, roadsides, and water bodies.
The order reads, “A strict and immediate ban is imposed on the act of indiscriminate throwing or dumping of garbage in front of shops and commercial establishments and burning of waste on main roads, public places, rivers, and other link roads by the Shopkeepers and Commercial Establishments within the limits of Shopian district.”
The notice observes that many shopkeepers and commercial establishments have been carelessly discarding waste, burning refuse by roadsides, and polluting water sources posing serious health risks to residents and contribute heavily to environmental degradation.
The order mandates strict compliance with the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016, and Plastic Waste Management Rules, 2019, in accordance with the directives from the National Green Tribunal.
The regulations outlined in the order require all shopkeepers and business owners to place two separate dustbins outside their premises to facilitate the segregation and proper disposal of waste, including organic items such as vegetable peels, fruit remains, and used tea leaves.
“This order shall come into force immediately and any person found contravening this order shall be subject to severe legal consequences as contemplated under the relevant provisions of the law.
Let it be known that this order is non-negotiable, and strict adherence is expected from all concerned parties.
Additional District Development Commissioner, Shopian will be the Nodal Officer for ensuring compliance to the order through field functionaries.”
