Srinagar, April 18: Kashmiri filmmaker Dr. Aijaz Ahmad Khan’s environmental documentary ‘Deodar’ – ‘Roots of Paradise’ – has received overwhelming appreciation following its successful showcase in the United States.
The film, which highlights the spiritual, cultural, and ecological significance of Kashmir’s Deodar forests, has struck an emotional chord with international audiences and environmental experts alike.
Lauded for its sincere storytelling and powerful visual narrative, the documentary was described by experts as both “a cinematic experience and a call to action.” Viewers commended Dr. Khan’s commitment to raising environmental awareness through the medium of film, with many urging global filmmakers to follow his example in promoting sustainability and supporting the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Following the strong reception in the US, the documentary is now set to be screened in the United Kingdom from May 8 to May 25, 2025. The announcement was confirmed by James Godman, Director, International Climate, who praised the film’s contribution to the global conversation on environmental preservation.
Reflecting on the film’s success, Dr. Khan told Rising Kashmir “The response has been heartening. Audiences connected with the message of the film, which reflects not just a local concern but a global crisis. Deodar is not just a film it’s a movement for preservation and awareness.”
The documentary also highlights the ground-level efforts of the people of Kashmir, including annual afforestation drives involving over five lakh Deodar saplings and the restoration of 15,000 hectares of degraded forests under government schemes.
