Srinagar, Nov 01: Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary on Friday said the historic Darbar Move, which shifts the administrative offices between Jammu and Srinagar, will resume in full next year.
Addressing a Press Conference at Jammu, Choudhary said that Darbar Move supports jobs and livelihoods in Jammu by bringing business to hotels, transport, and various local industries.
He said that, while government jobs cannot satisfy everyone’s employment needs, the boost in local commerce offers alternative opportunities.
The tradition, which involves relocating administrative offices between the twin capitals, was paused recently which had raised concerns among local business owners.
“Despite the interruption, plans are underway to ensure the practice resumes fully next year”, Choudhary said.
He said that Darbar Move was started by Maharajas with an intent to maintain economic balance between the Kashmir and Jammu provinces. “Our government respects this legacy and is committed to uphold it for the prosperity of our people,” he said.
On being asked about the recent celebrations by opposition members regarding the administrative shift, Choudhary said that they may celebrate now, but deep down, they too understand the importance of a balanced, thriving economy in Jammu.
Choudhary said that elections have ushered in new representation with elected MPs and MLAs. “We are first MLAs, then ministers, and then deputy chief ministers. People have high expectations from us,” he said.
Choudhary said that the current government has capabilities under the current structure but statehood would allow greater fulfillment of those aspirations.
“We have all the power,” Choudhary said, refuting any doubts about the authority of the current administration. However, he said that the full impact of governance could only be achieved with restored statehood which will allow for even larger and more impactful decisions.
The new government is committed to strengthen the status of Jammu and Kashmir’s and address the needs of people comprehensively, he concluded.
