Srinagar, Oct 29: Cluster University Srinagar has congratulated its founding Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Sheikh Javid Ahmed after he received the lifetime achievement award for his outstanding contribution in Nuclear Physics during the ‘International Conference on Nuclear Physics and Application’ held at University of Delhi.
A renowned scientist in the field of nuclear physics, Prof. Javid served as the founding Vice-Chancellor of the Cluster University Srinagar from March 2017 to May 2020. The award citation reads, “In recognition of your outstanding contributions and unwavering dedication to the field of Nuclear Theory: Nuclear Structure Model particularly Projected Shell Model. We honour your legacy and express our heartfelt gratitude for your exceptional service”.
He earned his Ph.D. from the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay, in 1987, and after several years of Post-doctoral research studies at some of the leading laboratories of world that include Daresbury Laboratory, England and Oak Ridge National Laboratory, USA; he joined the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Bombay as a Scientist in May 1994.
In 2003, he was appointed as Professor of Physics at the University of Kashmir. Prof. Javid has also held several key positions at the University of Kashmir including Dean Research, Dean of the school of Physical & Mathematical Sciences, and Head of the Department of Physics.
He has been a Visiting Professor at several leading universities of the world including University of Tennessee, USA; Technical University Munich, Germany and Universite Louis Pasteur, Strasbourg, France.
In collaboration with three other renowned nuclear physicists, Prof. Javid elucidated that shell structure of the unstable nuclei is radically different from that of known nuclear species along the valley of stability. This pioneering work has provided a new direction in nuclear physics research and several hundred papers have been written based on this original work. The novel predictions of this work have been confirmed in the experimental work performed at the radioactive beam facilities. He was elected Fellow of the prestigious American Physical Society in recognition of this seminal contribution.
