Ganderbal, Sept 07: As Assembly elections loom, the residents of Kangan Constituency are vocal about their urgent needs concerning power supply, infrastructure, and public services. Despite hosting several mega and mini power projects, the region is grappling with frequent power shortages, especially during the winter months.
Local residents from Tehsil Gund have highlighted a historical grievance: land was allocated in 1665 for the Upper Sindh Power Canal, which was meant to supply the Sumbal Power House. The community was assured of a 24/7 power supply, but this was abruptly halted decades ago. They are now demanding the restoration of power from the Sumbal Power House and the installation of fencing along the power canal from Rayil to Sumbal.
The irony of having multiple power projects yet continuing power crises is not lost on the residents. There is a strong call for the new government to ensure these projects fulfill their promises and address the persistent power shortages.
In Sonamarg, a key tourist destination, there are calls for enhanced infrastructure. Residents are seeking the development of special parks, maintenance of horse routes, new public toilets, and the upkeep of the old truck yard for parking. The focus on tourism infrastructure underscores the importance of maintaining Sonamarg’s appeal to visitors.
Healthcare is another critical area of concern. Mohd Ravees, a Kangan resident, has stressed the need for upgrades to healthcare facilities, including the PHC Kullan, the trauma hospital in Gund, and the Sub District Hospital in Kangan. While Ganiwan PHC is well-equipped, it suffers from a lack of manpower, affecting its service delivery.
Education and sports facilities are also in the spotlight. Government schools are reported to be overcrowded, with some classrooms housing up to 95 students in a single room. The lack of proper playgrounds for youth is also noted. Mohd Bijran from Kangan has urged the new government to replace the tin shed used for the High School in Hayan Palpora with a proper school building.
Residents also envision Mamer Kangan as a potential tourist hotspot, highlighting the need for the renovation of dilapidated foot bridges over streams and Nallah Sindh. Additionally, there are calls for increased employment opportunities within Sub-Division Kangan.
With elections approaching, voters in Kangan are hopeful that their concerns will be addressed, leading to significant improvements in their community’s infrastructure and services.
