Ganderbal, May 19: In a noteworthy initiative to enhance student safety, resilience and civic responsibility, the NSS Units of Government Degree College (GDC) Ganderbal, in collaboration with the Department of Physical Education and Sports, Monday organised a one-day awareness programme on ‘Self and Civil Defence.’
The event aimed to equip students with essential self-defence techniques and emergency preparedness skills, empowering them to act confidently during crises and contribute to community wellbeing. The programme was enriched by the presence of Shantmanu, Additional Chief Secretary, Higher Education Department, J&K, and Prof Sheikh Aijaz Bashir, Director Colleges, Kashmir, who were on an institutional visit. They praised the college for its proactive approach in promoting life-saving skills and fostering a culture of awareness and responsibility among students.
The session commenced with a welcome address by Dr Shabana Aslam, Convener, Sports Committee, who acknowledged the enthusiastic participation of students and faculty. Dr Ravinder Kour anchored the event with clarity and coherence, ensuring seamless flow throughout. Addressing the gathering, Principal Prof Fouzia Fatima emphasised the relevance of civil defence education in today’s world. She commended the students’ confident performance and expressed gratitude to the dignitaries for their encouraging presence. In the vote of thanks, Dr Jamsheeda Akhter, HoD Urdu and NSS Programme Officer-I, extended heartfelt appreciation to all dignitaries, faculty, volunteers, and students for their support and spirited involvement, which made the event a resounding success. The programme saw enthusiastic participation from students and staff alike, and the appreciation by senior officials has further motivated the college to continue such impactful, student-centric initiatives.
