Srinagar, Mar 22: The National Conference-led government tabled its first bill in the Legislative Assembly. After the Question Hour, Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary tabled the Bill to amend the Jammu and Kashmir Goods and Services Tax Act, 2017 (L.A. Bill No. 1 of 2025). The Bill has already been published in an extraordinary issue of the Official Gazette.
The first bill of the Budget session by the National Conference-led government was introduced by Deputy Chief Minister on behalf of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, who is also in charge of the finance ministry.
Its purpose is to align Jammu and Kashmir’s GST law with amendments made to the Central Goods and Services Tax law. The revisions primarily focus on regulatory measures for tax administration and will not impose any additional financial burden, either recurring or non-recurring.
“The amendments are regulatory in nature and aim to streamline tax regulation, without involving any new expenditure,” the Dy CM said.
Following the imposition of central rule in Jammu and Kashmir in 2018, legislative powers were transferred to the Parliament. Since then, the region’s legislative authority has been under parliamentary control.
Secretary of the J&K Legislative Assembly secretariat Manoj Kumar Pandit said the Lieutenant Governor has in pursuance of Sub-sections (1) and (3) of Section 36 of the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019, recommended that the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly introduce the bill.
