Jammu, July 21: Apni Party provincial president Jammu and former minister S Manjit Singh on Friday expressed commitment to revamp the transport industry. He was addressing a joining programme which was organized to felicitate Tirath Singh for his appointment to Apni Party as provincial president of Apni Party Transport Union.
During the programme, Tirath Singh was felicitated in Apni Party Office during a function on his appointment.
Speaking on the occasion, Manjit Singh said the transport industry is a very important sector that needs special attention from the government. “The transport industry not only plays a vital role in transporting essential commodities from one place to another place in Jammu and Kashmir and across the country, but it also provides employment to lakhs of people,” he said.
“Unfortunately, the transporters in Jammu and Kashmir face discriminatory approaches from the authorities and the underdevelopment in Transport Nagar where truckers and businessmen visit every day,” he said, adding, “The Transport Nagar is an economic hub for Jammu and Kashmir, but it is in shabby condition with no proper road, footpath, no drinking water supply, no security for the repair workshop, truckers, and drivers. The truckers stopped on Jammu-Pathankot or Jammu-Srinagar highways often face harsh situations because they are not provided clean drinking water through water tanks in Samba, Kathua, Nagrota, Tikkri, and other parts of Jammu plains and Ramban district.”
Singh also demanded the opening of a dispensary at Transport Nagar for the health checkup of the truck drivers, and their helpers. “These people should be provided better facilities at the halt points across the two important highways as they supply essential goods to J&K, and Ladakh after travelling from Kashmir to Kanyakumari,” he said.
While appreciating Tirath Singh for his work, he hoped that the truck operators, drivers, helpers, and workshop owners and workers will get justice under his leadership.
“The transporters are neglected by the government for various reasons even as they play an important role in society. The longstanding demands of the truckers should be accepted, and the Transport Nagar should be developed under the Jammu Smart City Project,” he said.
