Shopian, May 22: People’s Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti on Wednesday visited the house of slain Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) worker Aijaz Ahmad Sheikh in Heerpora village of Shopian district to express condolences and sympathy to the bereaved family.
Mufti described the killing of the young BJP worker, who left behind three small children, as unfortunate.
Addressing the media persons, she questioned the claims of normalcy in Kashmir, citing two recent attacks in south Kashmir which, according to her, raise suspicions.
Demanding an investigation into Sheikh’s killing, Mufti challenged the notion that terrorism had been eradicated in the region, pointing to the ease with which attackers entered Sheikh’s home.
She also referred to a recent attack on tourists in Pahalgam, saying tourists were never harmed in Pahalgam.
The PDP chief suggested the possibility of “some organisation” orchestrating these attacks to enforce a poll boycott in south Kashmir. She hinted at entities with longstanding ties to Hawala money used to incite youth in Kashmir towards terrorism.
Mehbooba urged the government to provide compensation to Sheikh’s family. Emphasising the vulnerability of Sheikh’s widow, she called for her immediate employment in a civil department in Shopian, with relaxed formalities.
