SKUAST-K holds Extension Council Meeting to discuss agricultural development

Srinagar, Apr 26: The Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology (SKUAST) in Kashmir held its 33rd Extension Council Meeting on Wednesday. The meeting was held through a hybrid mode at the conference Hall of VC Secretariat, under the chairmanship of Prof. Nazir Ahmad Ganai, Vice Chancellor, SKUAST-Kashmir and Jammu.
The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the progress made in the dissemination of technologies developed by SKUAST-Kashmir and their adoption by farmers. The meeting was attended by Directors from line departments, Deans, HoD’s of SKUAST-Kashmir, Joint Directors, and other representatives of line departments, along with progressive farmers.
During the meeting, an e-publication from Directorate of Extension titled “Knowing About Farmer Producer Organization” was released. The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Nazir Ahmad Ganai, emphasized the importance of carrying out extension services in view of evolving technologies. He stressed the need to develop smart revenue generation models for University farms, and the importance of Institutionalization of Student –Rural Exploration Programme for outreach intensification.
The meeting also discussed the importance of collaborative research and extension activities between universities and line departments for the welfare of the farming community. The expert members, Prof. T.S. Riar and Prof. R.R. Burman, suggested the adoption of integrated farming systems, capacity building and knowledge of farmers through trainings and exposure visits, SWOT analysis of farmers of the particular region for their growth and development, and utilization of the services of the progressive farmers in order to reach out to the farming community to improve on farmer-farmer outreach services.
Officers of the line departments hailed the contribution of scientific fraternity in agriculture and allied sciences and research conducted on field-oriented problems. Entrepreneurs and progressive farmers appreciated the skill development programmes and different trainings conducted by various constituent units of the University. They also expressed a desire to have more such activities in the future, as they guarantee employment opportunities to the educated unemployed youth.
Overall, the meeting proved to be a productive and informative event, with stakeholders exchanging valuable ideas on how to improve agricultural practices and benefit the farming community.
