Ganderbal, Jan 26: Residents of Sumbal Bala in Tehsil Gund, Ganderbal district, are expressing concerns as vehicles have once again started crossing a bridge that the R&B Department had declared unsafe three years ago.
Originally designated for pedestrian use following the 1992 flood that destroyed other bridges on Nallah Sindh, this particular bridge had seemingly escaped damage during the calamity. However, over time, it’s condition deteriorated, leading to the R&B Department’s safety declaration after the discovery of cracks.
A concerned local resident said the resumption of vehicular traffic on the previously restricted bridge. Despite the R&B Department’s earlier efforts, which included placing a board and securing the bridge for pedestrian use.
Another resident emphasizes that if the bridge is genuinely unsafe, the concerned department should take prompt action, either through repairs or the construction of a new bridge over Nallah Sindh. The residents stress the potential risks, especially in the event of a landslide on the Srinagar-Leh Road or a road accident, which diverts all traffic through the internal road, putting additional strain on the questionable bridge.
They are now urging the Executive Engineer of the R&B Department to look into the matter promptly and take necessary measures to ensure the safety of the bridge and the community it serves.
