Sopore, Jan 10: Abdul Gani Vakil, Senior Vice President of J&K Peoples Conference and former minister, has expressed concern over the escalating influx of substandard pesticides and fertilizers into Kashmir’s markets. He said the potential threat these substandard products pose to the vitality of the region’s fruit industry and essential crops.
During a comprehensive tour covering villages in Rafiabad, including Pakhwara, Lorihama, Saripara, Babgund, and Dangiwacha, Vakil voiced his dismay over what he perceived as the UT administration’s neglect of the fruit industry. He accused the Central government of turning a blind eye to the industry’s growth and development.
Vakil highlighted the significant challenges faced by the fruit industry, ranging from natural disasters and the impact of COVID-19 to intermittent closures of the National Highway. Despite the industry’s vital role in providing livelihoods to thousands, both the Central and UT governments have reportedly ignored pleas from fruit growers, particularly regarding KCC loan waivers and the provision of a special economic package.
Directly appealing to the central government, the former minister urged immediate and comprehensive support to help fruit growers revive the struggling industry. He appealed for the need to protect the livelihoods of numerous families dependent on the fruit sector.
The PC leader emphasized the critical role of government intervention in safeguarding the fruit industry. He stressed the urgency of taking decisive action against those involved in selling substandard agricultural products to prevent their detrimental impact on the industry. Vakil urged a swift response to protect the interests of farmers and preserve the integrity of Kashmir’s vital fruit sector.
