Ganderbal, Sep 02: A well-intentioned initiative by the Block Development Department in Gund and Kangan, central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district, to combat littering by installing multiple dustbins at various locations has hit a roadblock due to the persistent issue of uncollected garbage.
Several months ago, the Block Development Department installed numerous dustbins at strategic locations in Haknar, Gund, Rayil, Kulan, Rezan, and Gund, with the primary aim of encouraging residents and shopkeepers to dispose of their waste responsibly, thereby maintaining a clean environment. The initiative initially garnered positive responses from the local community, who eagerly embraced the concept of proper waste disposal.
However, despite the recent deployment of a garbage removal vehicle, the dustbins remain filled to the brim, causing foul odors and attracting stray dogs. This unpleasant situation has left local residents frustrated and inconvenienced.
Expressing their disappointment, the community wonders about the purpose of the dustbins if regular garbage collection remains neglected. Demanding immediate action to address this issue, residents are growing increasingly concerned about the deteriorating cleanliness of their surroundings.
In response to these concerns, Block Development Officer (BDO) Gund, Sheikh Arif, assured the community that the department is taking steps to rectify the situation. “The department has recently acquired seven permanent vehicles for the tehsil and is in the final stages of preparing a tender for the upcoming days,” he stated. “Efforts have been made to ensure that residents of the entire Tehsil Gund will no longer face further hardships.”
The residents of Ganderbal district now eagerly await the implementation of these measures, hoping for a cleaner and more hygienic environment in their community.
