Jammu, Mar 04: Shiv Sena (UBT) Jammu and Kashmir chief Manish Sahni has urged authorities to issue directives for closing liquor shops in Kashmir and Muslim-dominated areas during the holy month of Ramadan.
Addressing media persons here, Sahni reiterated his stance in favour of prohibiting liquor in Jammu and Kashmir. However, he said that until the government enacts a formal law, temporary instructions should be issued to close liquor shops on holy religious days as a mark of respect.
“The sale of liquor during the holy month of Ramadan deeply hurts the religious sentiments of our Muslim brothers. Hundreds of Muslim community members have reached out to me, urging me to raise this issue,” he said.
Sahni quoted a resident of Pahalgam, Shafi, saying that liquor sales continue even during the Amarnath Yatra and Ramdan, just a few yards away from the main base camp of Shri Amarnath Yatra, which he described as a significant blow to religious faith.
The Sena leader called upon the Chief Minister and Lieutenant Governor to impose a temporary ban on liquor sales in Muslim-majority areas during Ramadan.
