Srinagar, Feb 9: The Jammu and Kashmir Police have launched a major operation across the UT to prevent the misuse of SIM cards by terrorists and criminal groups.
The initiative, aimed at enforcing strict adherence to Know Your Customer (KYC) norms, has led to extensive inspections in several districts, including Srinagar, Ganderbal, Anantnag, Budgam, Pulwama, Shopian, Bandipora, Samba, and Kishtwar.
The move comes in response to growing concerns over the illegal use of SIM cards by militants to carry out terrorist activities. Over the past year, police have arrested more than 30 individuals involved in procuring SIM cards under false identities and handing them over to militants for illegal operations.
As per officials, they are focusing on ensuring that all SIM cards are issued following proper KYC procedures, which involve verifying the identity of the person obtaining the card. By doing so, the police aim to block a key channel used by militants to communicate and plan attacks.
This crackdown is part of a larger effort to prevent anti-national elements from misusing communication networks. The State Investigation Agency, along with district police units, is actively investigating individuals involved in the illegal procurement and distribution of SIM cards, the officer said.
Jammu and Kashmir Police have warned that anyone found guilty of aiding or facilitating the misuse of SIM cards for criminal or terrorist activities will face serious legal consequences. The police have also urged the public to remain alert and report any suspicious activity related to SIM card issuance.
Authorities remain committed to protecting the safety and security of the region and are determined to ensure that communication channels are not used by criminal or terrorist organizations, the officer said, adding that police’s increased vigilance in this area is expected to reduce the risk of such activities and help maintain peace and order in Jammu and Kashmir.
