Srinagar, Dec 24: The Vaishno Devi Sangharsh Committee Tuesday announced a three-day bandh in Katra  from December 25, demanding the government’s intervention in the ongoing ropeway project issue.

Vaishno Devi Sangharsh Samiti spokesperson Karan Singh told Rising Kashmir that they have not received any response from the government and have decided to observe 72 hours of Katra bandh from Dec 25.

“The government had promised that a response would be provided till 18th December but they are delaying this matter, and diverting our focus on other issues,” he said.

Singh said that during our recent discussions, they informed us that the Vice President’s visit is their priority, which is why they couldn’t provide a timely response. We have decided to exercise our democratic right to protest,” he added.

The ropeway will connect Tarakote, on the outskirts of Katra, with Sanjichhat, located 2.5 km from the shrine.

Senior Union leader and President Palki Association, Sohand Chand said that a crucial meeting was held in Katra on Tuesday which was attended by all stakeholders, resulting in a collective decision to oppose the project.

“It is unfortunate the government is playing with the emotions of the people. This issue concerns both employment and the faith of the people in Katra,” he said, adding that they have announced the Katra band from 25th December onward.

He said that during the meeting, it was decided to give the government a two-day ultimatum to halt the ropeway project. If the government does not act, a massive strike will be launched in opposition to the project.

“If this project is to be set up, it will impact the livelihoods of hundreds of laborers, workers, and hoteliers in town. Katra will become a mere picnic spot, like Gulmarg. We will not let the government proceed with this plan,” Sonu said.

He said this historical track to Bhawan has spiritual importance and should not be viewed through a materialistic lens. We appeal to the government to review this proposal again, Sonu added.

Earlier this week, Shri Mata Vaishnodevi Shrine Board Chief Executive Officer Anshul Garg said the ropeway will take only six minutes from Katra to Sanjichhat. One could then reach the shrine after walking for 30-45 minutes.

With December 2026 as the project deadline, it will have the capacity to carry 1,000 people in an hour and will cater to the ever-increasing rush of pilgrims.

“It also aims to make the journey safer and more inclusive for millions of devotees visiting the shrine annually,” he said.
