Jammu, Feb 4: In a bid to sustain efforts to prevent road accidents beyond the conclusion of Road Safety Month on January 31, the Rural Traffic Jammu department has launched a series of awareness programmes across the districts of Rajouri, Poonch, Samba, and Kathua. The Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Traffic Rural Jammu G L Sharma warned the people of strict action if they fail to follow the traffic rules in spirit.
These initiatives aim to educate the public on traffic regulations and promote responsible driving habits to enhance road safety. One such awareness programme was conducted Tuesday at the Mendhar Bus Stand in Poonch by Inspector Pawan Singh, DTI Poonch, along with his team. The session engaged around 50–60 participants, including transporters, drivers, and cleaners of buses, matadors, and sumos. The event was also attended by Kafil Ahmed, President of the Sumo Union of Mendhar, and Zakir Ahmed, President of the Bus/Matador Union of Mendhar.
Similarly, Sub-Inspector Kartar Nath, In-Charge DTI Bari Brahmana, along with his team, organised an awareness session at Sher-e-Kashmir Higher Secondary School, Telli Basti, Bari Brahmana. The event saw participation from the school’s Principal, Mr Qadir Hussain, staff members and students.
During both programmes, participants were briefed on the importance of adhering to traffic rules and regulations. Key points of emphasis included, avoiding driving without a valid licence, especially by juveniles and minors, refraining from the use of pressure horns and mobile phones while driving, discouraging over-speeding, overloading, and reckless driving or stunt biking and ensuring vehicles are roadworthy, with all valid documents in place
The Rural Traffic Jammu authorities plan to continue such awareness campaigns in collaboration with district administrations, the Motor Vehicles Department, and local police, aiming to create safer roads for all commuters. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Traffic Rural Jammu, G L Sharma, has appealed to the general public to strictly follow traffic rules and contribute to ensuring road safety. He also stressed that strict action will be taken against violators in accordance with traffic regulations
