Srinagar, Nov 09: Jammu and Kashmir has been allocated an additional 300 megawatts (MW) of electricity to meet the increased energy demands as the winter season approaches.
Rajesh Prasad, Principal Secretary of the Power Development Department (PDD), told Rising Kashmir, that the allocation will be distributed flexibly between the regions based on daily load requirements.
“The 300 MW isn’t assigned strictly between Jammu and Kashmir; it depends on the day’s load demand, which changes daily,” Prasad explained. Currently, Kashmir is receiving about 1,400 MW, while Jammu gets approximately 1,200 MW on average. The supply will be adjusted as temperatures drop and demand rises, particularly in the Kashmir Valley.
“As winter gets more harsh, demand will increase, and we will make the necessary adjustments to maintain a balanced supply,” Prasad assured. He added that the PDD has already commenced the additional power flow and is prepared to reassess the situation if demand spikes further. The department will monitor the power requirements closely throughout the season to ensure an adequate supply.
Pertinently, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, on the final day of the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly session on Friday, mentioned his recent meeting with the Union Power Minister, who sanctioned the additional 300 MW to mitigate power cuts during the harsh winter months.
