Anantnag, Oct 27: In the 115th episode of his monthly radio program, “Mann Ki Baat,” Prime Minister Narendra Modi lauded two residents of Jammu and Kashmir for their efforts in preserving and promoting local culture through art. He highlighted the achievements of a young calligrapher from Anantnag and a Sarangi player from Udhampur, who have been recognized for their unique contributions to cultural heritage.
During his address, PM Modi praised 20-year-old Firdousa Bashir from Anantnag for using calligraphy to depict various facets of local culture, a skill that has gained popularity among the youth in the region. “Many of our school children are interested in calligraphy. Through this, our handwriting remains clean, beautiful, and attractive. Today, it is being used in Jammu and Kashmir to popularise local culture,” the Prime Minister said. He added, “Firdousa Ji’s calligraphy has attracted locals, especially the youth, showcasing the beauty of the region’s cultural heritage.”
PM Modi also acknowledged Gori Nath from Udhampur, who has been preserving Dogra culture through the tunes of his century-old Sarangi. “Gori Nath Ji is engaged in preserving various forms of Dogra culture and heritage. Through his Sarangi, he narrates ancient stories and historical events related to his culture in an engaging way,” said the Prime Minister.
He further emphasized that similar efforts across the country are being made by extraordinary individuals dedicated to preserving cultural heritage.
Speaking to Rising Kashmir, Firdousa expressed her joy and surprise at being mentioned by PM Modi. “I had never dreamt of being mentioned like this. I was doing calligraphy at home, away from the public eye, and selling my art locally to earn a living,” she said. Firdousa shared that her journey began a year and a half ago after she passed her 12th grade. “By mentioning my name, my talent was recognized, and I hope others like me will also receive such recognition,” she added.
