Srinagar, Aug 12: The Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra, one of India’s most revered pilgrimages, has taken a significant leap forward with the introduction of “Yatra Mitras” – a unique volunteer programme that ensures the smooth and enriching journey of pilgrims.
The Housing & Urban Development Department (HUDD) and Swaaha Resource Management Private Limited have joined hands to train these volunteers, who assist pilgrims at every step of the journey.
The Yatra Mitras are trained to provide information on routes, facilities, and safety measures, ensuring pilgrims remain well-informed. They distribute eco-friendly kits to encourage green behaviours among pilgrims and educate them on proper garbage disposal and cleanliness along the yatra track.
The volunteers have undergone intensive training in areas such as communication skills, basic first aid, emergency response, and environmental education.
The presence of Yatra Mitras has significantly enhanced the pilgrimage experience, according to pilgrims. “Their guidance and support make the journey much more manageable and comforting,” said Anjali, a pilgrim. “The presence of female volunteers is especially helpful.”
The initiative has been widely praised by all sections of society. The President of the Shrine Board Langar Committee commended the sustainable kits and awareness drives, saying they have significantly decreased the ecological impact of the yatra.
HUDD and Swaaha envision expanding the Yatra Mitra programme by increasing the number of volunteers and enhancing their training. This vision aims to establish a robust support system that helps pilgrims while promoting sustainability and environmental conservation.
The Yatra Mitra initiative is a testament to the power of community and volunteerism in enhancing the pilgrimage experience. With dedicated support, sustainable promotion, and cleanliness efforts, Yatra Mitras are transforming the Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra into a model of well-organized, eco-friendly, and spiritually enriching journeys.
This initiative has already set a new benchmark in volunteer-driven support systems for religious tourism and is making the sacred journey of millions safer, more comfortable, and more environmentally conscious.
