Kulgam, Oct 05: In a bid to promote eco-tourism, Kulgam Forest Division has recently introduced five new trekking routes.
The division collaborated with Forest Protection Force Kulgam to organize a trekking event on one of the newly established routes from Malwan to Chimmer on Thursday.
An official said, during the event, the main focus was on students from Govt. Middle School Malwan, who were provided with a unique opportunity to familiarize themselves with the local flora and fauna.
Range Officer (RO) Kulgam, Suhail Ahmad Wani, said on the directions of Conservator of Forests (CoF) and Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) Kulgam, they organized the event on the deliverable week to promote trekking on the newly developed route.
“This newly established 5-kilometer trekking route from Malwan to Chimmer aims to acquaint people with the environment and forests, and educate them on conservation efforts.”
Alongside school children, the department’s front-line staff actively participated in the event, thereby enhancing the children’s understanding of forest preservation and its crucial role in the environment.
“The department is also aiming at bringing Malwan on the map of eco-tourism. And in this regard, the trek route is among the positive signs for the new beginning in the eco-tourism destination.”
He further said, the department has had ambitious plans to develop a total of 75 new trekking routes in the whole J&K. In Kulgam, we have successfully developed over four trekking routes, including Kousarnag and Badibekh, in addition to the operationalized Malwan to Chimmer route.
