Srinagar, Mar 18: The Jal Shakti Department has informed the Jammu and Kashmir Govt. that there are 17 schemes taken up in Wagoora-Kreeri constituency at an estimated cost of Rs. 72.27 crores, against which Rs. 32.10 crores have been expended so far.
The information was provided by the department in the Legislative Assembly in response to a starred question raised by MLA Wagoora-Kreeri Irfan Hafiz Lone on availability of drinking water in different areas.
In response to a question on whether it is a fact that, despite the implementation of JJM, a number of areas are without drinking water facilities—particularly in the Wagoora Kreeri constituency—the reply stated that most villages had piped water supply through Public Stand Posts (PSPs) installed under previous programs.
It further mentioned that the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) aims to provide Functional Household Tap Connections (FHTCs) to every rural household, except for single houses located far from villages or habitations, ensuring 55 litres per capita per day (lpcd) with water quality meeting BIS 10500 standards.
It said that most of the schemes are, therefore, retrofitting schemes, which aim to augment the existing infrastructure to meet the JJM objectives.
“Adequate drinking water supply is being provided in areas where the JJM schemes have been completed. However, there are some areas where JJM schemes have not been completed yet and as such may have low service levels,” the answer said.
The reply said these areas will see improvement upon the completion of the schemes, ensuring that every household receives water supply as per the mission norms.
The house was informed that there are 17 schemes taken up in Wagoora-Kreeri constituency at an estimated cost of Rs. 72.27 crores, against which Rs. 32.10 crores have been expended so far.
In response to another question on steps being taken to tackle the challenges of drought circumstances in the aforesaid constituency the reply said with the recent snowfall and rainfall, all the affected sources have got recharged and all the water supply schemes are running smoothly.
The government has refuted claims of an acute water crisis in villages across the Wagoora-Kreeri constituency, stating that most areas receive adequate water supply through existing schemes.
Wagoora currently gets water from WSS Mongam Wagoora, but residents are demanding a separate scheme, which may be considered based on fund availability. Villages like Takiya, Muqam, Putkha, Choora, Wagub, and Krankshivan reportedly have uninterrupted water access. Similarly, Bangdara receives water from an older scheme, with a new JJM-funded project underway.
Several villages are covered under ongoing projects, including Panzipora, Takiybal, and Wagub under NABARD and CAPEX. Hamray’s JJM scheme faced setbacks due to inadequate bore well discharge, prompting a shift to a surface water source.
