Srinagar, Feb 8: The Deputy Commissioner of Srinagar Thursday said that the government is committed to take strict action against the drug menace in Srinagar. He said that strict measures are being implemented by the administration to eradicate drug menace in the city.
Speaking at the inaugural event of an addiction treatment facility, which was virtually inaugurated by a Central Government Minister, Deputy Commissioner Srinagar, Dr. Bilal Mohi-ud-din, stated that drug addiction centres in JVC and SMHS hospitals are doing a good job.
He stated that in 2023, around 380 people were admitted at JVC and SMHS, and approximately 1500 came for follow-ups. Additionally, around 50,000 people have attended follow-up sessions in these centres.
“The government has identified some hotspots in Srinagar where reports of drug menace are increasing. They are committed to countering them for both rehabilitation purposes and taking strict action against drug peddlers. Progress has been made in taking action against those involved in the drug trade.”
In the coming time, strict measures will be taken against drug peddlers, and they are hopeful that this action will lead to a decrease in drug activity in the city. Dr Bilal added that a proposal has been sent for setting up drug de-addiction centers and rehabilitation centers under the Social Welfare Department. They are hopeful that it will be approved, making a major difference in saving the youth by providing access to drug addiction and rehabilitation centres.
Furthermore, efforts are underway to upgrade the existing SMHS rehabilitation centre and transform it into a real-life rehab centre. This initiative aims to empower drug consumers with the skills to stay away from drugs. In recent times, around 10 people have learned skills that will help them stay away from drugs, and they plan to expand this program further.
They are committed to eradicating drugs from Srinagar and are also working to facilitate drug de-addiction services and rehabilitation in the city.
