Akhnoor, Apr 11: Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) Mohan Lal Bhagat on Friday reaffirmed his unwavering commitment to the people of Akhnoor, pledging to fulfill every promise made in his Sankalp Patra and transform the constituency into a model region of development and self-reliance.
Addressing his first press conference following the conclusion of the Jammu & Kashmir Legislative Assembly session, Bhagat outlined several major concerns and development proposals he raised in the Assembly. He questioned the poor condition of the Akhnoor Sports Stadium in Palma, despite crores having been spent on it.
Following his demand, the Sports Minister visited the site and assured a thorough probe. Bhagat also called for the introduction of sports education courses at GDC Akhnoor to promote youth opportunities in professional sports.
He stressed the urgent need for embankment work along both banks of the Chenab River, citing serious soil erosion threatening villages such as Kerala, Chak Sikandar, Mehra, and Indri. He urged the government to initiate flood protection measures and proposed check dams in Gandharva, Suma Panjikaran, and nearby areas to enhance irrigation, groundwater levels and tourism.
On the issue of pending land compensation under Defence acquisition, Bhagat revealed that around Rs 9.21 crore remains unpaid due to verification delays. He assured constituents that he will personally pursue the matter with the Defence Ministry in New Delhi.
The BJP leader further demanded filling of vacant doctor posts in the region and announced steps taken to revamp the healthcare infrastructure, including utilising the old hospital building for ENT and other departments. He shared updates on the dialysis unit tender and projected timelines for CT Scan, MRI, and Blood Bank facilities. He also informed that CHC Jourian will be shifted to its new building this month.
Focusing on basic amenities, the MLA said work on 43 Jal Jeevan Mission schemes is being expedited to resolve drinking water scarcity in Akhnoor. On the education front, he pressed for scholarships for SC/ST students, a fair transfer policy for SC employees in Srinagar, and demanded the setting up of ITI and Polytechnic institutes in Akhnoor.
The MLA also highlighted cultural and administrative initiatives. The DPR for Maharaja Gulab Singh Library near Maharaja Hari Singh Higher Secondary School has been finalised, and funding is being arranged. Clarifying speculation around the Mini Secretariat, he said that Rs 5 crore has already been spent and a new DPR is under preparation for its completion.
Pushing for employment, Bhagat demanded the immediate filling of 32,474 government vacancies under JKSSB and JKPSC. He reiterated his strong pitch for District Status for Akhnoor, citing the constituency’s vast geography and population. He said that while raising the issue in the Assembly, he was marshalled out, but vowed to continue the fight.
Criticising the J&K government’s failure to deliver on key promises like 12 free gas cylinders, electricity bill exemptions, and the Youth Employment Generation Act, he said only a fraction of beneficiaries have received enhanced pensions and marriage assistance, falling short of public expectations.
Calling for communal harmony, MLA Bhagat condemned recent remarks by an NC-backed MLA, terming them anti-Hindu, and warned that any attempt to disrupt religious unity will not be tolerated.
“You, the people of Akhnoor, have placed your trust in me. I will not rest until I fulfill every promise. My mission is clear — to turn Akhnoor into a progressive, self-reliant, and model constituency,” he said.
