BUDGAM: Nestled just 13 kilometers from Srinagar, Wadwan Village in Budgam district has emerged as a shining example of educational excellence in Jammu and Kashmir. For over three decades, the village has maintained a literacy rate exceeding 99%, making it one of the most educated communities in the region.
In an interview with Rising Kashmir, Irfan Ahmad Wani, a resident of Wadwan Village said that he has completed his postgraduate studies and holds a two-year diploma in electronics and computer science. “Over the past thirty years, the literacy rate in our village has significantly improved, making it one of the leading villages in the Budgam district in terms of educational attainment compared to others in the area,” Irfan said.
” There are a number of scientists, doctors, teachers, professors, government employees, and individuals excelling in the private sectors in various national and international companies. This success is attributed to their dedication towards education and their relentless efforts to achieve their aspirations, which in turn inspires others in our village to recognize the vast opportunities that education offers in today’s world, ” Irfan Wani said.
He stated that the high literacy rate in the village has eliminated the need for students to seek coaching in other areas, as there are highly qualified individuals within their communities who teach all subjects. “Many residents who work in government positions are retiring, yet the educational standards in our village continue to improve daily. However, the unemployment rate is also rising, primarily due to the limited job opportunities available in both government and private sectors,” Irfan said.
Irfan said that Wadan is located 13 kilometers from the Srinagar district; however, the village lacks essential facilities such as a proper bus stand, health center, and transportation services. “We urge the government to provide these amenities, as this would enable our village to serve as a prime example at the national level in terms of both education and development,” he said.
Mohammad Asadullah Wani, a 70-year-old senior citizen from Wadwan proudly spoke about the high literacy rate in his village, especially in comparison to other villages in the district.
“There are many well-educated individuals from our village who are currently working in the United States of America, holding top positions,” Asadullah said.
Reflecting on the past, he added, “Throughout my lifetime, Wadwan has maintained a high literacy rate within Budgam district. My father, for instance, studied up to the 6th grade—a significant achievement in his time. Back then, there was only one middle school available in the nearby town of Magam. That was the closest option for students from our village and neighboring areas.”
Asadullah Wani said that things have drastically improved over the years. “Today, we have multiple government and private schools in our village. These schools offer a variety of facilities to students, which were unimaginable during my father’s time. Back then, simply reaching the 6th grade was seen as a high qualification.”
He further noted, “People from our village have pursued education in various fields, leading to a steady increase in literacy. As a result, Wadwan is now recognized for its educational achievements, with the current literacy rate exceeding 99%.”
He also stressed on the role of parents and the broader impact of education. He said, “It is the responsibility of every parent to ensure their children receive proper education. When youth are educated, they can find employment in both the government and private sectors, helping reduce unemployment in Jammu and Kashmir. Education is the guiding light in today’s world. If people truly understand its importance, we can overcome many of the basic problems in our society and our country.”
