JAMMU, FEB 16: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah today reiterated that uplifting marginalised communities, such as the Gujjar-Bakerwal, is not a favour but a fundamental duty of his government.
Addressing a felicitation ceremony at the Gurjar Desh Charitable Trust (GDCT) following his election as Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, Omar Abdullah emphasized that his government remains committed to addressing the concerns of the community.
The Chief Minister pointed out that, despite the limited scope for ministerial appointments after the last year’s elections, he ensured the inclusion of the Gujjar community by appointing Javed Ahmed Rana as a minister in his cabinet. “Although there was little scope for ministerial appointments, I personally requested Javed Rana to join the cabinet. Not only would he serve Jammu and Kashmir, but he would also be the voice of the community, addressing all your issues,” Omar Abdullah stated.
Minister Javed Ahmed Rana, who was present at the event, also spoke, along with Minister Satish Sharma, Advisor to the CM Nasir Aslam Wani, Patron Chief of GDCT Abdul Hamid Choudhary, and Chairman Arshid Ali Choudhary.
On the topic of establishing a Tribal University, the Chief Minister assured the gathering that the vision would soon become a reality. “I have full confidence that, with the dedication of your trust and people, the dream of a Tribal University will be realized soon. Prepare a project and a plan, and once you have it ready, I will sit with your trust and ensure we do our part,” he said.
Reflecting on his previous visit to GDCT, Omar Abdullah acknowledged the progress made over the years, despite challenges. “A lot has changed since my last visit, some for the better, and some not so easy,” he added.
The Chief Minister also paid tribute to Dr. Masood A. Choudhary, the visionary founder of GDCT, praising his contributions and legacy. “The person who planted the seed for this trust, who laid its foundation, is no longer with us. To begin my speech without remembering Dr. Masood A. Choudhary would be an injustice,” he remarked.
Omar Abdullah spoke emotionally about the strong bond his family shares with the trust, particularly his grandmother, Madr-e-Meharban, who had a deep connection with GDCT. “Though she is no longer with us, her name is etched here. You have honored her memory by dedicating a library in her name. It is my responsibility to ensure that the government continues to support this trust in fulfilling its mission,” he said.
Reaffirming the government’s commitment, the Chief Minister assured the community: “I assure you, on behalf of myself, the ministers, and the entire government, that wherever you need assistance, we will always stand with you.”
The Chief Minister later visited the newly established library block at GDCT, dedicated to research on the Gujjar-Bakerwal community, further reinforcing his support for the trust’s initiatives.
